PlanningFinancial Planning

PlanningFinancial Planning

At Moulton Wealth Management, we believe effective retirement financial planning should include more than simply managing your investments. A comprehensive retirement plan should coordinate the four critical areas of estate planning, protection planning, investment planning, and tax planning to help you make better financial decisions before and throughout retirement.

Your financial priorities change over the years, and decisions made in one area can affect another. Your investment strategy can affect your retirement income and taxes. When you claim Social Security can influence how much you need to withdraw from your savings. Roth conversions and Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) can affect your future taxes and Medicare premiums. Your estate plan and insurance coverage can help protect your assets and your family when life doesn't go according to plan.

Whether you are preparing for retirement or already retired, effective retirement planning should bring all these pieces together. We help you develop a coordinated strategy that considers your income needs, investments, Social Security, taxes, inflation, market risk, long-term care concerns, estate planning, and how you ultimately want your assets distributed to the people and causes that matter most to you.

Do You Know Your Family Index?

Your Family Index is the minimum rate of return you need during retirement to accomplish your financial goals. It considers your spending needs, income sources, inflation, taxes, and market volatility to help determine how much investment return you actually need - and, just as importantly, how much investment risk you may need to take.

At Moulton Wealth Management, you work directly with Rial and Don Moulton, both CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals and fiduciaries. We believe comprehensive retirement planning works best when your investments, retirement income, taxes, protection strategies, and estate plan work together rather than being addressed separately.

Our goal is simple: to help you build a comprehensive retirement plan designed to provide the income you need, protect what you've accumulated, manage unnecessary investment risk and taxes, and help you accomplish what's most important to you and your family.

Plan to get what you want out of life - and know the return you need to help get there.

managementPortfolio Management

managementPortfolio Management

At Moulton Wealth Management, we provide retirement portfolio management and investment management for retirees and those approaching retirement. As CFP® professionals and fiduciary financial advisors, we use tactical risk management through our unique Advance & Protect portfolio management process.

The world is changing. Growing government debt is a concern, information travels faster than ever, and financial markets can be volatile. And history tells us there will likely be another bear market. We believe these risks should be considered when building an investment strategy designed to help your savings last throughout retirement.

We start with your Risk Number, which you can calculate on our website—but we don't stop there. We consider your financial goals, time horizon, retirement income needs, and personal tolerance for investment risk when designing your portfolio.

Asset allocation is an important foundation, but we believe it is only the first step. For retirees who depend on portfolio withdrawals for income, significant losses during a bear market can create sequence-of-returns risk, potentially making it more difficult for their savings to recover.

Our proprietary Advance & Protect process incorporates a mathematically based sell discipline designed to help manage downside risk while seeking the long-term investment growth you need to pursue your retirement goals. Our goal is not to predict the markets, but to follow a disciplined investment process designed to adapt as market conditions change.

Yes, we believe in long-term investing, but we also know that in retirement protection of principal should be your top priority. If you lose too much principal, long-term average returns may not matter.

At Moulton Wealth Management, you work directly with Rial and Don Moulton, both CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals and fiduciaries serving retirees and those approaching retirement throughout Spokane, the Inland Northwest and around the country.

Our goal is simple: to help you Advance & Protect your retirement savings with a disciplined investment strategy designed for the unique challenges retirees face.

PlanningTax Planning

PlanningTax Planning

At Moulton Wealth Management, we believe effective retirement planning should include more than simply buying a group of investments and telling you to hold them through thick and thin. A comprehensive retirement plan should coordinate the four critical areas of estate planning, protection planning, investment planning, and tax planning.

There is a significant difference between tax preparation and tax planning. Tax preparation looks backward and reports what has already happened. Tax planning looks forward, helping you make informed decisions today that may reduce the taxes you pay throughout retirement.

An important goal is tax diversification. Just as you diversify your investments, it may make sense to diversify how your retirement savings are taxed. Having money in taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free Roth accounts can provide greater flexibility, especially if future tax rates rise. Strategic Roth conversions may help build that flexibility while potentially reducing future Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs).

Which accounts should you withdraw from, and when? Should your income come from taxable investments, a traditional IRA, a Roth IRA, or a combination? The most tax-efficient strategy may change based on your tax bracket, Social Security, RMDs, Medicare premiums, investment gains, and your income needs.

Planning for RMDs before they begin may create additional opportunities. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), for example, can provide a tax-efficient way to give while satisfying all or part of an RMD.

Married couples should consider the potential Widow's Tax. After one spouse dies, the survivor may have less household income while facing higher tax rates as a single filer. Planning in advance may help reduce the potential tax burden on the surviving spouse.

At Moulton Wealth Management, you work directly with Rial and Don Moulton, both CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals and fiduciaries. We integrate tax planning with your investments, retirement income, estate planning, and protection strategies to help you create a more tax-efficient retirement.

managementLong Term Care Insurance

managementLong Term Care Insurance

One of the greatest financial risks retirees may face is the need for long-term care. The cost of extended care can place significant pressure on retirement savings and affect not only the person receiving care, but also their spouse and family.

At Moulton Wealth Management, we help individuals and families in Spokane, the Inland Northwest and around the country, evaluate long-term care insurance and other strategies for addressing potential long-term care expenses as part of a comprehensive retirement plan.

Long-term care insurance is designed to transfer a portion of the financial risk associated with extended care to an insurance company. Depending on the policy, benefits may help pay for services such as in-home care, adult day care, assisted living, memory care, and nursing home care.

Long-term care insurance policies generally include several important features. The benefit amount determines how much the policy may pay toward eligible long-term care expenses, while the benefit period determines how long benefits may be available, subject to the specific terms and limits of the policy.

Most policies also include an elimination period, which is similar to a deductible measured in days. Depending on the policy, you may be responsible for your own long-term care expenses during this period before insurance benefits become available.

Because the cost of care can increase substantially over time, some long-term care insurance policies also offer inflation protection designed to increase available benefits as the cost of long-term care rises.

There is no single long-term care strategy that is appropriate for everyone. Traditional long-term care insurance is one option, but depending on your circumstances, other insurance and financial planning strategies may also be worth considering.

The key is to plan before care is needed. At Moulton Wealth Management, you work directly with Rial and Don Moulton, both CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals and fiduciaries. We can help you evaluate the potential impact of long-term care costs on your retirement plan, explore available options, and determine whether long-term care insurance may be appropriate for your needs, goals, and budget.

Will your retirement plan be prepared if you or your spouse needs long-term care?

Protecting what you have worked a lifetime to build is an important part of a comprehensive retirement plan. At Moulton Wealth Management, we help retirees and those approaching retirement evaluate insurance strategies designed to protect their income, assets, families, and financial security from potentially catastrophic losses.

Depending on your individual needs, this may include planning for long-term care expenses, disability or loss of income, life insurance needs, legacy planning, and potential estate tax liabilities. We help you evaluate your risks and determine whether insurance should play a role in your overall financial and retirement strategy.

Our goal is to help you identify appropriate insurance solutions from financially sound carriers while considering how those solutions fit within your broader retirement and financial plan. Because insurance should not be considered in isolation, we look at your income needs, assets, family circumstances, and long-term financial goals before recommending a strategy.

At Moulton Wealth Management, you work directly with Rial and Don Moulton, both CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals. CFP® professionals must meet rigorous standards for education, examination, experience, and ethics and are committed to acting as fiduciaries when providing financial advice.

Protecting your financial future requires more than simply buying an insurance policy. It starts with understanding your risks and developing a strategy designed around your needs.
